Department 15 Building Preservation is divided into the following Units:

  • Unit 151  Building Protection and Restoration of Historical Monuments
  • Unit 152  Non-destructive Testing and Building Monitoring
  • Unit 153  Corrosion and Sealing of Buildings

The focus of the department deals in maintaining of buildings and building materials. In general the development of protection and preventive actions are based on the results of damage analysis. Within this field the department also deals with surface protective systems (coatings) on metallic and mineral building materials. The members of stuff have fundamental knowledge of corrosive and decomposition processes taking place in modern and historical building materials as well as in steel and non ferrous materials. Alongside tests of construction products and construction systems in the field of sports floors and sports facilities are run. Individual products as well as complete systems are tested and assessed for their suitability.

  • Resarch and investigation in the fields of corrosion of steel and non-ferrous metals implemented in civil engineering as well as in the area of building installations as a basis for damage analysis and developing concepts of corrosion protection
  • Decomposition and degradation processes in concrete and natural stones as basis for failure analysis concepts for protection and assessments for the durability of building materials
  • The efficiency of protective systems for metallic and mineral building materials regarding the special aspects of different environmental conditions
  • Environmental compatibility of building materials and protective systems
  • Suitability tests of construction products and construction systems in the field of sports facilities

The department is equipped with modern test methods for mechanical testing, chemical analysis and mineral characterisation of these materials. The given test methods allow investigations into the degradation and decomposition processes of building products. The unit 418 Sports Grounds and Sports Facilities is accredited according to DIN EN ISO/IEC 17025:2005 for sportsfunctional, protectivefunctional and technological tests in the fields of indoor sports floors, outdoor synthetic sports surfaces, artificial turf as well as built-in parts of sports halls.

Our clients are bodies of public authorities, construction industry, public and private building promoters , engineering consultancies, and the courts.

Our members of staff are partners of the German authorities of civil engineering, and are represented in expert committees and project groups of the Deutschen Institut für Bautechnik, Berlin (DIBt) (German institute for civil engineering, Berlin (DIBt)) and cooperate in standardizing committees of the German Standardization Association (DIN and VDI) as well as in expert committees and working groups (GFKORR, DafStB, COST).

Development
  • Development of field-experienced corrosion test methods for the assessment of high-strength steels (e.g. stressed steels, fastening elements such as concrete screws)
  • Development of strategies for quality assurance and methods to repair /restore damaged natural stones and other historic building mate
  • Development of test methods for the assessment of the environmental compatibility of building materials
  • Development of sanitation methods for buildings polluted with dangerous substances

  • Chemical and mineral analysis of the chemical composition of building materials as a basis for of investigations of material damage
  • Corrosion on technical facilities in buildings (HVAC -heating, venting, air-conditioning, drinking- and waste-water pipes)
