Department 13 Fire Safety is subdivided into the following Units:

  • Unit 131  Reaction to Fire
  • Unit 132  Fire Resistance
  • Unit 134  F&E-Structural Hazard Engineering

MPA Fire Safety-Department is mainly concerned with testing and experimental assessment of the reation to fire of building products as well as the fire resistance of building constructions, thus acting as a notified certification, inspection and testing (CIT) body in the fire area. For most of the building products, kits and constructions, MPA´s Fire Testing Department is notified by Wirtschaftsmini­sterium Baden-Württemberg and Deutsches Institut für Bau­technik (DIBt) in Berlin as PÜZ-Stelle and as testing institute for fire approvals in the reaction to fire and the fire resistance area, too.

Test reports, third-party control reports, conformity certificates, general building regulation certificates and approvals or expert evidences, issued by MPA´s Fire Safety-Department, are therefore generally valid within Bundesrepublik Deutschland as official certificates as are required by German fire regulation and building legislation.

Fire Safety Department is ”notified body” under article 18 of construction products directive at the Commission of European Communities, and §11 of German BauG.

  • Assessments, analysis and expert evidence in the fire testing area e.g. for approvement from building authorities in case of special buildings or inovel building products, kits and building constructions, or proof of evidence within judicial hearings
  • Fire testing and assessment of building products, kits and building constructions, e.g. external wall claddings (ETICS), facades, floorings, wood and timber materials, plastics, textiles, curtains, blinds, decoration materials, filter means, upholsteries, interior materials for motor vehicles, roofs and roofing constructions, ceilings, walls, columns, doors, fire shutters, cables, cable- and pipe shutters, glazings, safety cabinets etc.
  • Assessments, analysis and expert evidence in charge of ministries, building authorities, industry and fire engineers
  • Planning of fire protection improvement means for existing buildings
Inspection / Certification
  • Notified national and european fire testing body
  • Third party inspection and certification of standardized (regulated) and approved (non-regulated) building products / building constructions in terms of fire
  • Fire testing of building products and building constructions for issuing approvals by building authorities

Consulting service
  • Consultance for producers, industry, civil engineers, authories and DIBt in terms of fire protection and use of building materials and construcions
  • Consultance for ministries in cases of issuing approvals for special building constructions
  • Consultance in drafting fire protection conceptions for building construction and building rehabilitation works

  • Research and development programmes for verification of new european fire testing methodes, especially for the new european testmethod "SBI" (Single Burning Item), and for proofing possible comparabilities of safety levels of existing national and new european fire testing methods
  • Research progammes for fire assessment from various product areas such as e.g. insulating materials, floor coverings, roofs and roof constructions, coatings etc.
  • DIBt research programme "Entwicklung europäischer Kleinbrandverfahren"
  • Member of European Commission research programme "CBUF" (Combustion Behaviour of Upholstered Furniture)
  • Member of research progammes of IWB for combustion behaviour of dowels and high-resistance concrete
  • Development of fire testing methods for fire classifications (national: A, B1, B2 and european: A1, A2, B, C, D, E) of organic and inorganic building products covered by national regulations as well as for products for seagoing vessels, rolling stock, noise reduction walls and tunnel sealig foils, especially for textiles and plastics for non load bearing applications
