Prof. Dr.-Ing. Prof. h.c. Dr.-Ing. E.h. Hans-Wolf Reinhardt studied civil engineering at the University of Stuttgart, where he also earned his doctoral degree in 1968. After professional appointments in Chicago (USA), Delft (The Netherlands), and Darmstadt, he was appointed Professor of Construction Materials at the University of Stuttgart in 1990. Until his retirement in 2006, he headed the Institute of Construction Materials as well as the former Baden-Württemberg Research and Materials Testing Institute – Otto Graf Institute (today: MPA University of Stuttgart).
Hans-Wolf Reinhardt was one of the leading figures in teaching and research in the field of construction materials, with a particular focus on concrete structures. His scientific work covered an exceptionally broad range of topics, from the development of new types of concrete—such as high-performance, self-compacting, and fiber-reinforced concretes—to fracture mechanics, durability of concrete, and non-destructive testing methods for civil engineering structures. His research has had a lasting impact on international research and continues to influence science, standardization, and engineering practice to this day.
In recognition of his scientific achievements, Hans-Wolf Reinhardt received numerous honors, including honorary doctorates from Dalian University (China) and the Technical University of Braunschweig, a Fellowship of the American Concrete Institute (ACI), and Honorary Membership in RILEM. In 2013, he was also awarded the Emil Mörsch Medal by the German Concrete and Construction Engineering Association (DBV).
With Hans-Wolf Reinhardt, the international civil engineering community loses a globally recognized researcher, a deeply committed teacher and supervisor of many doctoral candidates, and a highly respected leader of both the Institute of Construction Materials and the MPA University of Stuttgart. We lose not only an outstanding scientist who profoundly shaped both institutions, but also an exceptional individual who inspired his colleagues and was held in the highest personal esteem by all who worked with him.
Our deepest sympathy goes out to his family and to all who were close to him. We will honor his memory with lasting respect.
